Talk:Characters

It might be nice to use this page to have authors who have created new characters, to perhaps say a few words discribing them.

Replying on: OCs[edit]

That is most certainly a possibility. However, we have to bear in mind that the nice thing about our interactive story is that in different threads, different things can happen, and therefore different realities coexist.

What is more, you might have a well-rounded idea about an original character when you introduce him, but the less is known about a character, the more room there is for other people to play with them, shape them into something they can use.

So I can imagine such OC pages to develop over time, as the character develops; but as the character, there will be a differentiation of descriptions. Lines like “in one thread, this character has a older sister and two younger brothers; in another thread he is an only child.”

Another question; please clarify[edit]

Quote Admin:

So there really isn't much point in creating a character page for a character that (as of yet) has no role in the interactive story.

So the only purpose of this character list is to create an index for characters appearing in the interactive chapters?

What would you suggest would be the other purposes? These pages are all in support of the interactive story, making it the best it can be, easiest to navigate and so on - nothing more.

I don't see much sense in recreating detailed pages for all Tolkien's characters - including those who are not even mentioned in our interactive story - when there are already so many sites doing the same thing. What would that add?

Of course what you can do is add a character that is not in the interactive story yet, but that you'd like to be in there. You could write a challenge or enter a plot bunny, and link to the character page from there. That makes sense from the interactive story perspective.

Basically, if the only page that links to a character page is the Characters page (i.e. the only time a character is mentioned on these pages is in the character pages - not in any of the chapters of the Interactive Story, not in any challenge or plot bunny, not in any discussion), in my opinion, there's no point in that character being on that list.

But if you - or anyone - have some great idea of a new use for these pages, please, enter it here. Creative, innovative new uses is what wikis do best!

The reverse also applies: because Faramir appears in every single chapter, there isn't much use in linking to his character page from every single chapter for all this would create is a list of all chapters.

I certainly hope that is not a requirement since i see plenty of places where they story can continue without Faramir. For instance an OC elf is about to seduce and kidnap Boromir. I kind of see the focus on Faramir more as a launching off point than a firm guide. Since there are infinite possibilities with this story, I hope the Admins won't frown at some non-Faramir diversions.

Why? This is a Faramir interactive story and I fail to see why the story should shift focus to other characters.

I certainly would. It's only fair. How can I call a page a Faramir interactive story, if it's going to involve characters other than Faramir as a main focus point? As it is Faramnir slash gets hardly any airtime on the Onternet, do we really need to bring in Legolas and other sundry elves into a page where the focus is on Faramir? I don't think so.

Please let's keep the focus on Faramir.

Gabby,

This is not a stand-alone interactive story like I know you've experience them at Esteliel's, and maybe also elsewhere. This one is an integrated part of the Faramir Fanfiction Archive.
You may not have visited the site before, or even since we have an Interactive Story here, just focused on the interactive, but Faramir is what we do here. We treat interactive story chapters much the same as chapters of other ongoing fics, that is why for instance they are listed on the Archive's Recent Additions page. Therefor, they are subject to the same submission guidelines as any other story on the site: of course little detours are fine, but the main focus should be on Faramir.

So if you want to write extensively about Boromir and his elf, the Faramir Fanfiction Archive is not the place to do it.

To Minx and Iris:

Okay. I think that rule is rather limiting insofar as creativity, but i will certainly abide by it, as it was the two of you who set up the interactive story in the first place and you certainly have the right to set the rules. I will keep what you said in mind; that if i have the urge to write extensively about non-Faramir characters, to do so somewhere else. Thanks for making this clear.
